Pen was wringing her hands when she finally heard heavy footsteps creaking up the stairs. She was stationed in an old apartment block, the unit empty and likely between Mortal tenants. A perfect place to watch over the chaos festering below.

The doorknob turned, letting HotPenis in without a fuss. His face was drawn as usual but still, his presence swallowed up all the air in the room.

Pen had never had any interest in the police look before, but whatever sexy tactical thing he was wearing now made her eager to rip it off. Her pulse did a reckless jump, but fortunately, she was starting to get used to feeling light-headed around him.

“I told you I’d see you today,” she said, leaning against the wall and smirking like she wasn’t dying inside. After the other night, in his bed, under him … Against her better judgment, Pen was starting to imagine ways that she could have him, and it was getting harder to remember why she couldn’t. A line needed to be drawn—she just didn’t know where to draw it.

HotPenis cracked a smile. “I take it you’re not just here to chat?”

“We’re prepared for that.”

“I’m sure you think so.”

HotPenis rolled his eyes affectionately. It made her chest flip. No matter how uncertain her head was about him, her heart was all in.

“Well?” he prompted. She’d spent too long gazing at him.

“Well what?”

“Aren’t you going to share whatever superior knowledge you have? You came all this way to tell me that our preparations are insufficient. So what would you like me to do about it?”

Pen faltered. “I—It’s not so much that I have anything particular to tell you. I don’t actually have any concrete intel—”

“AltPenis,” he said, curving his lips into a real grin. She could have sighed at the way he said it, even if the fake name had her insides curling up. “Did you come here to ask me to be careful?”

“I came here as backup,” she corrected. “You know how incompetent you police are.”

That grin didn’t move an inch.

“And maybe …” She breathed through the admission. “Maybe to ask you to be careful.”

HotPenis came close enough that her neck arched to hold his stare. “I always am,” he promised, smile dimming. “You could have just texted, you know?”

Pen’s eyes fell to the floor, but not before she caught the real question in his. Why didn’t you text me back?

The morning after their last encounter, she’d woken up to a message from him. Nothing complicated or demanding, just a simple good morning text that set her heart running hard in his direction. And since then,
